School sport is much more than a pastime and healthy activity. It is also the context in which students can experience success and failure, realise their dreams and aspirations, and strengthen their teamwork skills and camaraderie in pursuit of their goals.
The sports field provides many opportunities for personal development, and sport – be it social or competitive – is widely recognised as a means of developing character. This cannot happen in isolation, however. Character must be taught – it must be taught by coaches, leaders and role models who demonstrate its value both on and off the field.
Every Mangaroa student is expected to demonstrate 100% commitment to their sport and display the attributes of good sportsmanship.
We offer a range of team sports including Basketball, Floorball and Touch Rugby. At times, we have specific sports organisations that come in to teach our students specific skills such as Badminton, Swimming, Basketball, Lawn Bowls and Rugby.
As part of the Upper Hutt Sports Calendar, students can participate in Athletics, Basketball, Hockey, Ki o rahi, Danish Rounders, Netball, Traditional Maori Games, Football and Cross Country.
Mangaroa School delivers a progressive Health and EOTC curriculum across all year levels, combining foundational safety units (cyber, road, and sun safety) with milestone experiences like Year 0–2 Sleepovers, Year 3–4 Zoo Sleepovers, and Year 5–6 Senior Camps.
Health modules alternate biannually, using the Navigating the Journey framework alongside Police and Life Education programmes.
In Physical Education, a comprehensive Long-Term Plan aligns with Upper Hutt Sports Committee events.
All students access scaffolded swimming lessons through Fulton Hogan, alongside specialised external clinics in gymnastics, cricket and football.
We have a fully stocked PE shed and have active participation in nationwide initiatives like Movin’ March to ensure high student engagement across all ability levels.
After-school and regional sporting opportunities continue to thrive, utilising HERO and Google Forms to streamline registrations. Students regularly represent Mangaroa School in Upper Hutt Sports Calendar events, including floorball, touch, swimming, basketball, dance, netball, athletics, cross-country, and Traditional Māori games (Ngā Taonga Tākaro).
Students continue to bike, scooter and wheel their way around the school. Students are actively using ramps. Individual students also demonstrate strong initiative by independently registering for regional events like the Tough Guy & Gal Challenge and the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.
Staff actively support these initiatives by participating alongside outside providers during skills sessions to ensure long-term professional development.
